Moving Into Meditation——A 9-hours Workshop with SARAH POWERS

Moving Into Meditation
Yin/Yang Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation
A 9-hours Workshop with SARAH POWERS
exclusively at Y+ Yoga Center, Shanghai from 28-30 Oct 2011

Incorporating a daily yoga and meditation practice into our life keeps us attuned to the importance of living ordinary moments with awareness. Nevertheless, even the most dedicated practitioners hit plateaus and need opportunities to become re-inspired. In this workshop Sarah will provide an atmosphere for balancing the body, heart and mind through active and receptive yoga poses, as well as offering teachings on Mindfulness meditation so that we can deepen or develop a skillful and committed meditation practice.

Yin yoga is an essential compliment to our more active styles and offers a vehicle to develop our contemplative nature. The Yin style also keeps the body supple at its core while encouraging stagnate chi (prana) to flow throughout the joints, engendering a quality of steady ease. The active practice helps rejuvenate our natural vitality while developing a core stability and meditative body centered presence. This workshop will focus on the integration of our Yin and Yang aspects of being, creating a practice that values both vitality and insight. A guided and silent mindfulness meditation will be incorporated with the yoga sessions.

Class time and outline:
Fri 6:00pm-8:00pm:  focus on floor poses and meditation
Sat 1:00pm-4:30pm:  focus on backbends and compassion practice
Sun 10:00am-1:30pm: emphasize standing poses and mindfulness meditation.
Total 9 hours
As Sarah likes to teach in a progressive manner, she asks that you come to the whole intensive.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who has been doing Yoga for at least one year and has a strong interest in meditation and we recommend you come with a basic understanding of these practices by reading Sarah’s book, Insight Yoga.

About Sarah Powers

Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She is the founder and author of Insight Yoga, which interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga, Buddhism, Chinese medicine, and Transpersonal Psychology into an integral practice to enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with an alignment-based slow flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachings. Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to open to our emotional difficulties is paramount for preparing one to deepen and nourish insights into one's essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana and Tantric practices of Buddhism.

Sarah and her husband Ty Powers live in the San Francisco bay area and have created the Insight Yoga Institute which offers 500+ YA hour trainings with other renowned teachers blending yoga, buddhism and psychology (www.insightyogainstitute.com). Balanced Action Leads to Freedom

Everyone is always talking about balance. Learn practical ways to apply this beautiful concept in your asana practice. In Anusara Yoga, we seek to articulate nature's way in the body. This is what Anusara teachers mean when they speak of Universal Principles of Alignment. These are not arbitrary principles or the sole domain of a particular style of hatha yoga. Instead, as the name states, they are Universal. In addition to aligning with the natural and optimal design of the body, they work in every pose, no matter the outer form. Come taste the harmonious efficacy of these principles as they bring new insight into your yoga practice.

Aligning with the Natural Harmony
Time: 6th April (Fri) 19:15 - 21:15

In this session we will explore how our intention to connect to the bigger way can create a more refined and purposeful practice. By opening to something bigger, we can align with the flow of the dynamic forces that are constantly at play within and around us. We will explore this intention through a dynamic mix of fluid, flowing asana.

Back Bend Bliss
Time: 17th April (Sat) 10:00 - 12:00

Hip Harmony
Time: 17th April (Sat) 14:00 - 16:00

Hip openers and forward bends create a deep release in our Being if done correctly. Learn how to practice this class of poses to optimize pranic flow in the body. Particularly, we will release excess vata (wind element) in the body that can cloak the power of awareness in a fluttering of thoughts and emotions.

Eye of the Tiger Practice
Time: 18 April (Sun) 10:00 - 12:00

Today we play with a mixed practice of standing poses, inversions, hand balancing and back bends to awaken the inner Tiger. Get ready to deepen your practice in this intensely-playful session.

Taming the Tiger
Time: 18 April (Sun) 14:00 - 16:00

As with yesterday's afternoon session, our intention is balance. After a strong practice in the morning, we conclude with more cooling asana, including hip openers, twists and forward bends. We will assimilate our new understanding as we transition from the workshop environment back to the 'world'.
